Lumpkin County Library Staff and the Friends of the Library are in the early planning stages of kicking off the 2024 Annual Summer Reading Program.   It will be a challenge for all.

Won't You Help?

Friends of the Library are raising $3500.00 this year to support our local Library.

The Lumpkin County Library’s Summer Reading Program has gotten so popular they are doubling the activities planned for June. The free programs, for children, teens, and adults, include live presentations, workshops, and prizes for meeting reading goals.

Last summer, more than 1,800 children and over 500 adults participated during the nine-week-long program. Interest in the teen programs increased more than 625%  since 2022. Adults read 668 books online, teens read 649 books, and kids spent 2,774 hours reading.

“This is one of the most vital programs that the library offers,” according to Director of the Chestatee Regional Library System Leslie Clark. “It promotes early literacy and combats the summer slide that has shown to occur when children don’t engage in literacy activities when they’re not in school.”  Doubling programs and paying the increased cost of craft materials will be expensive. This is where the Friends come in, hoping to raise $3,500 this year.

The entire staff looks forward to watching the kids get excited about checking out books from the library, participating in all the activities but most of all reading.   When children participate in summer reading programs they are motivated to read and develop positive attitudes about reading books, and the library. They maintain or improve their reading skills during the summer vacation, can make new friends and more.

Ms. Clark said, “The financial support of the Friends makes it possible for us to provide quality programs and activities for the children, teens, and adults of the community. Without the funds from the Friends, the summer reading program would take almost the entire programming budget for the library.”  We cannot support our community without your support!

Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. For as little as $150, individuals  and businesses can become sponsors and be recognized on the Friends’ website  and on printed materials.
